School (Year 1 to Year 11)

From year 1 onwards pupils are placed onto a Personalised Learning Pathway. Our curriculum offer is split into three ‘tiers’ which enables us to personalise and differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of individual pupils. These are the areas offered within each pathway:

Pre-formal (this tier has a curriculum for pupils with PMLD and a separate curriculum offer for pupils with complex ASD):
  • Communication
  • Cognition
  • Physical
  • Self-care and Independence
Activities at this level for pupils with PMLD will include multi-sensory learning activities, outdoor education, Rebound Therapy, hydrotherapy, Eye Gaze, Sherborne, sensory cookery.

Activities at this level for pupils with complex ASD will include Attention Autism, multi-sensory learning activities, outdoor education, social skills, work baskets following the TEACCH approach.

Semi-formal:
  • Core subjects – Literacy, Maths, Science
  • Foundation subjects – Humanities, Arts, Personal Development
Themes include 'Eco Warriors', 'Amazing Animation' and 'Race Across the World'.

Formal:
  • Subject specific learning
Themes include ‘Health and Wellbeing’ and ‘Growing Up’

All pupils follow a key stage appropriate thematic curriculum which incorporates the foundation subjects and where suitable, may also link to the core subjects. Careful long term planning ensures that there is a breadth and balance of subjects across the year. Our curriculum is further enriched through specialist provision such as music tutors and sports coaches. We follow the Read Write Inc Phonics programme. Fox Wood is a specialist school for communication and interaction and our staff are highly skilled in utilising a range of communication methods to support pupils to access the curriculum, examples include Makaton, PECS, objects of reference (OOR), sensory cues and on-body signing.

Our Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils also benefit from a progressive work related learning programme which incorporates enterprise, World of Work (WoW) and work experience opportunities. Pupils are accredited for their work across the curriculum through ASDAN, Personal Progress and Arts Award. Our key stage 4 curriculum provides the building blocks in preparation for transition into college provision.
